Protecting Your Pet this 4th of July
The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and I can already hear the fireworks popping!
Let’s be honest, is it even The Fourth if there’s no firework display? Not really! As spectacular and entertaining as fireworks can be for us humans, the loud noises, flashing lights and strong scents can be very scary for our furry friends. That being the case, we’ve put together a short list of things to do to prepare yourself and your pet for the upcoming celebrations...
Prior to any celebrations, make sure your pet’s collar is on and their ID tags and/or microchips are up to date with your current address and phone number. This applies to both indoor and outdoor pets, even those indoor babies could get scared enough to escape in an effort to “find safety.” Ensuring this is done will make it much easier to reunite with your pet if they take off.
Make your environment as calm and comfortable as possible. Try turning on an Animal Planet show or some classical music for your pet to listen to. This can help drown out the noise of those pesky fireworks. You could also try warming up your pet’s bed with a heating pad to make a cozy, safe space out of one of their favorite places. And don’t forget their toys and treats as positive reinforcement during this scary time!
It is important to reassure your pet they will be okay throughout the loud night. A weighted vest or calming coat, provides light to mild pressure on your pet’s torso. It’s like a constant hug for your furry little buddy! Another item you could try is a diffuser, which emits calming substances into the air that can help reduce anxiety and stress in pets. Finally, interactive toys and/or snuffle mats could help to keep your pet busy, forgetting about all about the chaos outside.
