Flea eggs can survive many years in a cold environment only hatching once a warm body comes into proximity. This affinity to warmth is why fleas are more common during the summer months, although once your central heating is switched on in the winter your pets may suffer a whole new flea infestation.

Lice

There are two main kinds of lice that live on dogs and cats, the biting louse and the sucking louse. The names reflect the way the parasite feeds. The biting louse will bite an animal in the same way as a flea, whereas a sucking louse attaches itself to the host rather like a leech. Severe infestations of lice can lead to irritations of the skin.

Ticks

These are picked up outdoors, often from long grass. Ticks attach themselves to the host by sucking and can cause infection if not removed. They can be difficult to remove as they bury their jaws deep into the animal’s skin. Ticks are more often found in the countryside and on working dogs that pick up these parasites from livestock.

In some areas ticks are associated with diseases such as Lyme’s disease. If you are bitten by a tick it is a good idea to inform your doctor as you may need a course of antibiotics. Ticks start off small with a black body, but can grow to the size of a baked bean and turn white. Once they are full they will drop off the pet and find another host to feed off. Mites

Mites are so tiny they can only be seen through a microscope yet they can cause serious skin irritation. There are different types of mite that fall basically into two different categories — burrowing mites and surface mites. Both types are diagnosed from skin scrapings, and are usually transmitted via livestock and wild animals. Foxes and sheep are notorious for carrying mites.

Tapeworm

Tapeworms are transmitted in a variety of ways such as eating raw meat or feces. However, the most common way for your dog to catch tapeworms is through fleas. The tapeworm lays eggs inside the flea, then when the dog cleans itself, it eats the flea and digests everything except the tapeworm egg. The larva hatches and hooks itself into the small intestine where it lives on the nutrients your dog gets from its diet.

Tapeworms can grow to several feet long and, if not removed, the dog can develop dietary deficiencies such as anemia. They can be detected by the presence of shedding cells which resemble grains of rice and are eliminated with the dog’s feces.

Roundworm

Roundworm is more serious than a tapeworm infestation since it can cause serious illness in puppies and is also dangerous to pregnant women and children. If ingested, roundworm can cause abnormal fetal development and even lead to miscarriage.

It is transmitted through eating infected meat, grass and feces. Roundworms live in the intestines like tapeworms, but tapeworms travel solo whereas a dog could be infected with hundreds of roundworms. They usually cause vomiting, diarrhea and a distended abdomen.
